But incorporated into the system was a knurled thumb-wheel which served the purpose of allowing the covers to be manually raised or lowered when required, even if there was no power, or if the electric motor had gone bad. When there was a loss of power, the headlamp covers remained in the position they were in at the time of power loss. On systems where the headlamps were ORIGINALLY operated by an electric motor, such as most Chrysler products from the late '60s through early '70s, the electric motor operated a rod to each headlamp cover, and the motor reversed direction to raise and lower. I knew the Mark III had rear windows that opened unlike the 1976 Mark IV and I was keen to see them working. I thought that was a good thing untill I realised the only items that had been replaced were the spark plugs and some of the air in the tires. Then I bought a one owner Califorian Mark III with low miles and almost competely original. The car was driven every couple of weeks and apart from a blown exhaust gasket, I never had an issue. In the six years that I had it I dont think I ever saw the headlight covers up unless the lights were on. Really nice car, had been well looked after and everything worked. The first Lincoln I bought was a 1976 Mark IV.
